Vocabulary:

hobo
Sentence where this word is used: ““Maybe a hobo wanted to go sledding!” laughed Julian.”
What does it mean? Hobo means a homeless or poor person, but said in a very mean way.
Why did the author use this word in the story? The author used this word in the story to explain how someone took Mile’s old broken sled, and that person probably couldn’t afford buying a sled.

kinetic
Sentence where this word is used: “It’s not enough that we have to sit through class after class and try to stay awake while they fill our heads with all this stuff we will probably never need to know, like how to figure out the surface area of a cube or what the difference is between kinetic and potential energy. I’m like, who cares? I’ve never, ever heard my parents say the word “kinetic” in my entire life!”
What does it mean? Something that results in a motion.
Why did the author use this word in the story? The author used this word in the story to explain how Jack doesn’t like school, and they teach him boring things, and for example “kinetic” which he never even heard his parents say, and his dad is a teacher, so he would probably say “kinetic”, but surprisingly he doesn’t.

potential

Jack wanted to write that the best event in his life is when he became friends with August. Jack didn’t write about this because he wasn’t friends with August anymore, and if the teacher hanged it up on the bulletin board, then everyone would see, and laugh at Jack. He ended up writing about how he was afraid of the ocean when he was little. “I thought about this a lot, to be truthful. I have to say that I think the bravest thing I ever did was become friends with August. But I couldn’t write about that, of course. I was afraid we’d have to read these out loud, or Mr. Browne would put them up on the bulletin board like he does sometimes. So, instead, I wrote this lame thing about how I used to be afraid of the ocean when I was little. It was dumb but I couldn’t think of anything else.”

Why do people assume Jack’s family is rich?
People assume Jack’s family is rich because Jack goes to a private school, and everyone thinks only rich people can go to private schools. In reality, Jack’s family isn’t very rich. “My parents are not rich. I say this because people sometimes think that everyone who goes to private school is rich, but that isn’t true with us. Dad’s a teacher and Mom’s a social worker, which means they don’t have those kinds of jobs where people make gazillions of dollars.”

What do Jack’s parents do for a living?
Jack’s mom is a Social Worker and his dad is a teacher. “Dad’s a teacher and Mom’s a social worker, which means they don’t have those kinds of jobs where people make gazillions of dollars.”

The two theories of how Skeleton Hill was named is
  1. August and Jack say that someone was on Skeleton Hill, they fell and broke his/her neck. ““Some kid broke his neck there. That’s why it’s called Skeleton Hill.”

How does Jack feel after realizing what he had done?
Jack felt really bad and angry at himself after he realized that he had said mean things about August, and that August heard them. “It’s just that I knew Julian and everybody thought I was so weird for hanging out with August all the time, and I felt stupid. And I don’t know why I said that stuff. I just was going along. I was stupid. I am stupid.”

What comparison does Jack make to his teacher?
The comparison that Jack makes to his teacher is that she talks like adults in Charlie Brown movies, and go like mwah-mwah-mwah all the time, and you cannot hear what they’re saying. “I didn’t hear a word of what Ms. Rubin was saying after that. Blah blah blah. Science-fair project. Blah blah blah. Partners. Blah blah. It was like the way grown-ups talk in Charlie Brown movies. Like someone talking underwater. Mwah-mwah-mwahhh, mwah mwahh.”

What happened when Julian insulted August?
When Julian insulted August and called him “freak” then Jack got angry and punched Julian in the mouth. ““Why’d you do that?” he said, catching up to me at the stairs. “We could have been partners. You don’t have to be friends with that freak if you don’t want to be, you know....” And that’s when I punched him. Right in the mouth.”

What is the “pumpkin” picture Jack is staring at?
The “pumpkin” picture Jack is staring at is actually a student-made portrait of Mr.Tushman, the principle of Beecher Prep.

Why does Jack believe telling why he punched Julian would just make things worse?
Jack believes that telling Mr.Tushman why he punched Julian would only make things worse because if he said that Julian was saying mean things about August, Julian would say Jack also said these things, which is true.

Its has been over a month since Halloween and Jack is still upset about losing August’s friendship, but I think that they will become friends again because Jack figured that August heard him say mean things about him, but in reality, Jack didn’t mean them. He was only saying those things because he was with Julian.

What does Jack mean when he says he lives on the side of town where people don’t like to park their cars?
When Jack says he lives on the side of town where people don’t like to park their cars he means that he either lives in an apartment building, or that nobody there affords cars.

Julian calls Jack lucky. Who do you think is more lucky?
Julian calls Jack lucky, but I think Julian is luckier. First of all, Julian has more friends than Jack. In addition, he has more money. Julian is also cooler and more popular in the school. Jack only has August as a great friend, and his parents don’t earn “gazillions” of dollars.

Why do you think the author included the chapter “Private School”?
I think the author included the chapter “Private School” to show that not everyone who goes to a private school is rich. For example, we now know that Jack’s parents aren’t very rich.

What do you think will happen now that Jack has realized his mistake? What could he do to solve this problem?
After Jack has realized his mistake, I think that he will try and talk to August, and apologize. He can solve this problem by simply saying that he didn’t mean it, and that he said it because he was with Julian, and that he is truly sorry.

Does it make it better that Jack wouldn’t have said these things in front of August?  Why do you think he said them?
It would’ve been better if Jack didn’t say these things in front of August. I think he said this because he was with Julian, yet he was trying to gain reputation. August was only losing him his reputation, so he had to say something mean about August, to show that Mr.Tushman told Jack to be ‘friends’ with August and Jack really didn’t want to ever be friends with August.

Why do you think the teacher was going to let Julian and Jack switch partners?
I think the teacher was going to let Julian and Jack switch partners because the teachers see Julian and Jack as really kind students, and probably believed them that they had the same idea.

Why did Jack punch Julian after he called August a freak? Is there another way he could have handled this? What would you have done?
Jack punched Julian after he called August a freak because Jack was angry at Julian that he constantly calls August a freak, just because of his facial deformity.  A few other ways Jack could’ve handled this is by simply saying “Julian, stop calling August a freak. I mean it!” or “Julian, why do you have to call everyone a freak? Is August a freak to you because of his facial disorder? Well, I guess you’re the freak.” I would’ve handled this by saying “Julian, why do you always call August a freak? He’s trying his best to fit in, and you’re just plain rude.”

What do you think will happen to Jack as a result of this?
I think that Jack will have a bad reputation and everyone will be scared of him. Julian will most likely hate Jack. August might think that Jack punched Julian because he said something mean about him again, and Jack and August might become friends again.

Will it be easy for Jack and August to be partners?
It will not be easy for Jack and August to be partners. Since Jack is suspended from school for the rest of the week (until the winter break), August will have to come to Jack’s house, and Jack to August’s.

What do you think Mr. Tushman might have whispered to Jack’s mom?
I think Mr.Tushman might have whispered to Jack’s mom and said that she should discuss this with Jack when they get home, and find out why Jack punched Julian.

Why do you think Mr. Tushman didn’t expel Jack from school? What does this tell us about Mr. Tushman?
I think Mr.Tushman didn’t expel Jack from school because he knows that Jack is a very kind student, one of the kindest in his grade. Mr.Tushman knows that Jack wouldn’t punch someone unless he actually had to. This tells us that Mr.Tushman isn’t a very strict and mean principle, yet he is kind to those who are usually kind too.
